General Characteristics

Head to Body Length : 3.0-3.8 m (10- 12.5 feet )

Tail Length : 60 - 70 cm (24 - 28 inches)

Horn Length Larger : 0.5 - 1.3 m (1 foot 8 inches - 4 feet 4 inches) / Smaller : 2 to 55 cm (1-22 inches) 

Height 1.4-1.7 m (4.5-5.5 feet)

Weight :  800-1,350 kg (1,750-3,000 lbs)

Description

The adult black rhinoceros is  overall color is dark gray. It assumes the color of the soil in which it rolls. A feature that distinguishes the black rhino from its close relative, the white rhinoceros is a prehensile top lip, which it use to snip the twigs off the wooded plants on which it browses. Hence its official name, the Hook-lipped Rhinoceros. The black rhino carries its shorter head higher than the white rhino. The two pointed horns are made of keratin, a substance similar to that which hair is made of.

Range - The Black Rhino lives from Cape town to Somalia

Habitat - They live in primarily in grasslands, savannahs and tropical bushlands

Diet  consumes leaves and branches of shrubs and trees

Status - 3,100 survive in the wild

Reason for the Status - poaching, habitat destruction , and hunting

What type of animal is it - herbivore

Gestation : 15- 16 months

Longevity : 40 years
