General Characteristics

Head to body Length : 103-119 cm. (40-47 inches)

Tail Length :  26-47 cm (10-18 in)

Height : 60-94 cm (23-37 in)

Weight.25-55 kg (55-121 lb)

Description : 

The hind legs of the striped hyena are heavier and shorter than the forelegs. The head is broad with pointed ears. The color of the coat varies from gray to light brown with vertical black stripes along the length of the body. On the back there is a conspicuous, darker erect crest. The legs also have dark stripes on them. The coat is very long and tends to billow

Range -   The striped hyena is found in Northern Africa, Middle East, to India.

Habitat - They live in Dry Savannahs, Bush Country, semidesert, and deserts.

Diet -   They eat Carrions, sheep, goats, small mammals, birds, lizards, snakes, insects, and fruits.

 Status -  There numbers are declining in the wild around the world. In North Africa and Arabia they are extinct.

Reason  for the status -  This is because people kill this type of hyena to protect livestock, and is frequently poisoned as a carrier of rabies and other diseases.
