General Characteristics Head to Tail Length : 92.5 to 100 cm ( 36 - 39 inches ) Height : 35 inches (90 cm) Weight : 10 kg ( 22 lbs ) Description : Darwin's Rhea is smaller, "thicker" and the feathers are more dense because it lives in a much more harsh and cold climate than the Grey, or Common Rhea. The neck and back of the head are fully feathered with short contour feathers. they are also golden brown tending toward gray, with white flecking throughout. Range - Darwin's Rhea are found only in South America--Patagonia, in the Andes in Argentina, Chile, Bolivia and Peru. Habitat - They live in tropical scrub forest, tropical savanna's and grasslands. Diet - It eats plant matter, including roots, fruits, seeds, and leaves. Status - There are only 40 found in the world. Reason for the Status - This is because of they are hunted for its feathers, meat, eggs and other body parts. Its habitat is being destroyed by agriculture.
