General Characteristics Head to body length - 57 feet (17.5 meters) Tail length - 18 feet (5.5 m) Height : 18-20 feet Weight : 10.5 tons (10,670 kg) Fin size : 12 - 15 feet Description This whale is black with white patches on the flippers, bottom surface of the tail flukes and body; it is identified by this unique back and white pattern. The head is flattened and the flippers are the biggest of any species Range - Humpback Whales are found worldwide in all major Oceans. Habitat - They live primarily in coastal and continental self waters. Diet - It eats some seamounts, krill, and schooling fish. Status - There used to be 125,000 Humpback whales. Now because of whaling, the whale population has drastically reduced. Today there are only 5,000 - 7,500 remaining in the wild. Reason for the status - This is because of people hunting them in small numbers by isolated original fisheries and many more die from entanglement in fishing gear.
