Length : 40 cm (16 inches) Height : 85 cm ( 2.8 feet ) Weight : 300 kg ( 660 lb ) Description This small water buffalo is found in Indonesia . Indeed, ‘anoa’ is the Sulawesi word for ‘buffalo’. This species is characterised by its stocky body and thick, dark skin which is darker in males than females . The body is sparsely covered with brown to blackish hair and the forelegs bear white or yellowish white hair. The nape and throat are also a pale yellow-white color . Range -The Lowland Anoa lives in Islands of Sulawesi, Celebes, and Indonesia. Habitat - It lives in deep rainforest. Diet -The Anoa eats grasses, leaves, and shoots. Status - The current lowland Anoa population is estimated to be approximately 5000 animals. The number of wild lowland anoas is still decreasing in the wild even right now . They are protected in the zoos only. Reason for the status - This is because of illegal hunting , expansion of human settlement, which has resulted in logging activities, as well as clearing of forested areas and draining of marshland for agriculture.
