GENERAL CHARACTERISTICS

SHOULDER HEIGHT: 60 – 69 cm ( 24 -28 in )

WEIGHT:   20 – 35 kg ( 44 – 77 lbs )

RANGE: Senegal to Northeastern Ethiopia

HABITAT: Open thornbrush Savanna and Vegetation - covered dunes

FOOD:  Grasses, and leaves

STATUS: Endangered. This population is slowly declining.

REASON FOR STATUS: illegal hunting, competition with domestic livestock, and habitat destruction.

GESTATION PERIOD:  184 - 189 days ( 6 months )

LIFESPAN: YRS IN WILD –  YRS IN CAPTIVITY: 12 to 15 years
