Physical Description

This rhino species is the smallest of all rhino species.

 The Sumatran Rhino has got hair particularly on its body which tell the difference.

The species can be easily recognized by the two deep skin folds encircling the body between the legs and the trunk, and its thick pelage of short stiff hairs.

Two horns decorate the snout, although the frontal horn is much more conspicuous than the nasal horn.

Characteristics

Length :  6.5 to 9.5 feet ( 2.0 to 3.0 meters )

Horn length : 10-31 inches ( 25 -79 meters ) / 3 inches ( 10 cm ) second horn length smaller

Weight : 1,300 to 2000 pounds ( 600 to 950 kg )

Height : 3 to 5 feet ( 1.0 to 1.5 meters )

Range : Indonesian island of Borneo and Sumatra

Habitat : Dense tropical forest. Both lowland and highland

Diet : fruits and leaves in the wild / Their diet varies in captivity

Status : There are only 200 Sumatran Rhinos surviving only. Populations in peninsular Malaysia are thought to have undergone losses in the past few years. The population has decreased 50 %  the past 15 years

Reason for the status : This is due to poaching, over hunting and habitat destruction

Gestation Period - 15 to 16 months

Lifespan - 30- 45 years in the wild / 28 1/2 years in captivity
