General Characteristics

Size -Male length, head-to-tail: 42-98 inches (105-245 cm)

Male height, shoulder - 27-55 inches (68-137 cm)

Weight - Male: up to 880 pounds (400 kg); / Female up to 550 pounds (250 kg)

Description : The plump, bovine-like body is covered with dense, long yellow to brown hair.  The short, stocky legs have broad hoofs and strong dew claws as an adaptation to their mountainous environment.  In profile, the face is convex with the nasal ridge arching outwards.  Both sexes carry strong horns that are 25-30 cm / 10-12 inches long, and curve out, backwards, and upwards at the tips.  The bases of the horns may have transverse ridges.

Range - Takins live in China.

Habitat - They live in mountains.

Food- It eats leaves twigs, shoots, and, grass.

What Type of animal is it -They are herbivores.

Status - With fewer than 5,000 Takins remaining in the wild, and under 50 in zoos

Reason for the status - This happens because of hunting, habitat destruction, and deforestation.

Gestation Period - 7 - 8 months

Longevity - 12- 15 years
